“Yahweh, the God of Israel–Israel, the people of Yahweh”—this phrase, J. Wellhausen contends, encapsulates the central theme of the whole OT and gives a comprehensive unity to the contents of the Hebrew Scriptures.1 This relationship between Yahweh and Israel finds expression in affirmative sentences such as, “I will be your God and you will be my people” whereby Yahweh declares both his covenant relationship2 to Israel and their corresponding fellowship with him.
